Why Is My Ice Maker Making Noise but Not Producing Ice?

A cycling, clicking, or grinding ice maker that never actually drops ice points to a specific handful of causes.

An empty or interrupted water supply

If the ice maker's motor cycles normally but nothing fills the mold, the most common cause is water not reaching the unit at all — a closed supply valve, a kinked line, or a frozen section of tubing.

A frozen fill tube

If freezer temperature runs colder than it should, or humidity gets into the ice maker compartment, the fill tube can freeze solid, blocking water from reaching the mold even though the rest of the cycle runs normally.

A worn-out or jammed ejector mechanism

Grinding or clicking sounds, specifically, often point to the ejector arm that's supposed to push finished ice into the bin. If it's jammed or worn, the motor keeps trying and making noise without successfully releasing ice.

A faulty water inlet valve

Even with the motor and ejector working fine, a bad inlet valve won't let water into the mold at all, which produces the classic "runs like normal but no ice ever appears" symptom.

Why noise without ice is worth addressing quickly

A jammed mechanism can strain the ice maker motor over time, and a frozen line left unaddressed can eventually crack. Catching it early usually means a simpler repair. See our ice maker repair page, or check why your ice maker isn't making ice for the broader troubleshooting picture.

Quick Answers

FAQs

Is a clicking ice maker always a sign of a problem?
A single click as the cycle starts is normal. Repeated clicking or grinding with no ice produced usually means the ejector or motor needs a look.
Can I keep using the fridge while the ice maker isn't working?
Yes, the ice maker is a separate system from cooling, so the rest of the refrigerator will keep working normally while it's diagnosed and repaired.
