Temperature problems get blamed on the thermostat more often than the thermostat deserves. Several other parts produce the same symptom.
This is the most useful piece of information. If the freezer is fine and only the refrigerator section is warm, the problem is usually about air getting from one to the other — a damper, a fan, or a frost blockage. If both compartments are off in the same direction, the issue is more likely temperature control or the sealed system.
A thermostat or its sensor that misreads temperature will tell the system to run too long or not long enough. The telltale pattern is that the actual internal temperature doesn't track the setting: you change the dial and nothing meaningfully changes over the next day, or the fridge sits consistently colder or warmer than where it's set.
Most refrigerators cool the fresh-food compartment by routing cold air over from the freezer through a damper. A damper stuck closed leaves the refrigerator warm while the freezer stays perfectly cold; stuck open makes the refrigerator run too cold and freeze produce near the vent.
Vents blocked by a packed shelf or a stack of containers, or frost built up over the evaporator coils, cut off cold air distribution. This produces warm spots, uneven cooling, and readings that make no sense relative to the setting — and it's one of the easiest things to rule out yourself before booking anything.
If the evaporator fan isn't circulating air, the freezer may hold temperature while the refrigerator runs warm. If the condenser fan or coils are dirty enough to limit heat rejection, both compartments drift warm even though the compressor is running constantly.
On electronically controlled units, the board decides what to do with the sensor's reading. A board fault can produce exactly the symptoms of a bad sensor, which is why replacing a sensor without diagnosing first sometimes changes nothing.
A refrigerator in a warm garage, pushed tight against a wall with no clearance behind it, or in direct afternoon sun has to work harder to hold temperature. A nearly-empty fridge also swings temperature more than a full one, since there's less thermal mass to hold steady.
Put a standalone thermometer in the middle of each compartment and note readings over a day or two, confirm the vents aren't blocked, check the door seals, and vacuum the condenser coils if they're accessible. Those notes usually narrow the diagnosis considerably.
Thermostat, sensor, damper, fan, and control board all overlap in symptoms, and a few of them share the same failure signature almost exactly. A technician measures actual temperatures and component behavior to identify which one is at fault rather than replacing the most likely suspect and hoping.
