What Causes Frost Buildup in a Freezer?

A light dusting of frost is normal. Thick ice on the back wall, on the shelves, or around the door is a symptom with a specific cause behind it.

A failing defrost system

Modern freezers run a defrost cycle on a schedule to melt frost off the evaporator coils. When the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or the timer/control that triggers the cycle fails, frost never gets cleared and builds into a solid sheet of ice — usually on the back interior wall first. This is the most common cause of heavy, recurring frost.

A worn or dirty door gasket

Warm, humid room air leaking past a bad seal condenses and freezes the moment it hits the cold interior. Frost concentrated near the door edge or in one corner often points here rather than at the defrost system. A gasket that's cracked, compressed flat, or sticky with residue can leak even when the door looks closed.

The door not sealing fully

An overfilled shelf pushing against the door, a bin that isn't seated, a freezer that isn't level, or a door hinge that's sagged can all hold the door open by a fraction of an inch — enough to feed a steady supply of humid air in.

Opening the door frequently, or in humid conditions

Every opening lets moisture in, and Portland's damp air carries more of it than dry climates do. A blocked or frozen drain line

Why manual defrosting is a temporary fix

Emptying the freezer and letting the ice melt will always clear the frost. If the underlying cause is a defrost component or a leaking gasket, the ice comes back on the same schedule — so recurring buildup after a manual defrost is itself useful diagnostic information worth reporting when you book a visit.
